Postdoctoral Research Position in mm astronomy at the 30-meter telescope (closed)

deadline for applications: June 30, 2019

IRAM is an international research organization for millimeter and submillimeter astronomy supported by the CNRS (France), the Max-Planck Gesellschaft (Germany), and the IGN (Spain). IRAM operates two world-class research facilities, a 30-meter single-dish telescope (Spain) and the mm/submm interferometer NOEMA (France). The scientific capabilities of the 30-meter telescope are continuously enhanced with state-of-the-art technology such as for EMIR, the multi-wavelength heterodyne frontend, and, with the recent commissioning of the new large field-of-view continuum 1mm/2mm camera NIKA2.

IRAM invites applications for one postdoctoral research position at IRAM/Granada. The successful candidates are expected to invest 50% of the time on personal astronomical research and 50% to support science operation of the 30-meter telescope. IRAM is seeking scientists with a PhD in physics/astronomy, with experience in millimeter/submillimeter/far-infrared astronomy and continuum cameras and/or heterodyne frontends. The candidates will join the Science Operations Group to provide assistance to visiting astronomers, to help in calibrating and reducing the incoming data, and to support the commissioning of new instrumentation. Knowledge of a programming language like python is a strong asset. He/she will typically spend about one week per month at the observatory.

Candidates must have completed the PhD prior to beginning the position. Review of applications will begin in July 2019. The search will continue until the positions are filled. The appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of extension to a second year. Applications should be sent as one pdf file to the IRAM personnel department, and should include a cover letter indicating motivation and qualifications, a curriculum vitae with a list of publications, and a short research statement. Applicants should arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to the personnel department. Inquiries should be addressed to the station manager Miguel Sánchez-Portal.
