Science Verification: NGC1512/10

Description

NGC1512/10 (J2000 04:03:54.3 -43:20:56 - coordinates of NGC1512) is a pair of nearby (about 11 Mpc) interacting galaxies consisting of a large high-metallicity spiral (NGC1512) and a low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (NGC1510).

Capabilities to be verified

With this target we will demonstrate the Cycle 1 large mosaic capabilities. Observations will use the 12-m array plus 7-m array (ACA) and single dish. Correlator modes to be tested are: mixed and 1spw/BB modes. The mosaic will cover approximately 9' x 3' and will consist of approximately 130 pointings with the 12-m array. Band 3 will be used (CO). Additional functionality to be demonstrated is: combination of data from 12-m and ACA.

Suitability

This is an example of a pair of interacting galaxies that requires the large mosaic capability planned for Cycle 1 in order to image the gas and map the dynamics. It will be well placed for observing at about the time we expect the software to be ready for this and it is at a good declination for ALMA (-43 degrees).

Status

This target was observed but no data of suitable quality for release was obtained.
