CHEER: A Survey of Planet-Forming Chemistry in the Precursor Environments of Giant Planets

1. Program Abstract
Protoplanetary disks are precursors to planetary systems. Disks around Herbig stars (young A/B/F-type stars) are known prime sites for studying the chemistry of giant planet formation. However, there has yet to be a large, uniform survey of Herbig disk chemistry across a variety of disks and molecules - and, given the extreme disk environments of Herbig stars, lower-mass stars cannot be used as proxies. We propose to survey planet-forming chemistry around 20 Herbig disks, 40% of known Herbig disks within 320 pc. We target tracers of *) ionization, relating to the growth and movement of planet-forming material; and *) cold chemistry, controlling the gas vs ice distribution and thus the composition of forming planets. We also cover a wealth of legacy planet-forming chemistry, including CO gas mass estimators; sulfur chemistry and probes of C/O ratios; and tracers of shock and planetary activity in disks. Ultimately, we will: 1) characterize how the extreme environments of Herbigs manifest in their chemistry; 2) compare Herbig disk chemistry to that of lower-mass stars; and 3) constrain how the compositions of evolved A/B/F-star planetary systems, like the iconic HR 8799, come to be.
